Students build snow shelters
HOUGHTON -- Students at Houghton High Shool found a way to have fun in the cold and snow by building quinzees.
The freshmen science class built the outdoor snow shelters from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., taking only a short break for lunch.
The students were graded on the finished project, but the assignment was given to get the kids to enjoy the cold, snowy days of winter.
"It's actually my first time building one of these, and I was surprised at how well it held up because it's just pure powder and it's holding up," said ninth grader, Jordan Becia.
The freshmen built 15 quinzees in all, but they didn't think staying overnight in the snow structures sounded like fun.
