Coast Guard helps the fire department

MARQUETTE -- The Coast Guard was training emergency officials on Lake Superior Wednesday on how to rescue someone from the ice.

The Coast Guard used the motto "throw, go, pull" to teach Marquette firefighters.

A member of the Coast Guard played victim as members of the Marquette City Fire Department learned how to approach the situation to save someone in the ice.

The Coast Guard taught firefighters to throw a line, send a crew out with a rescue board, or pull a person out of the water with a shepherd's crook.

"Well, as soon as emergency personnel get on the scene, we want to assess the situation; we want to find out how many people are in the water and where they came from and how long they've been in the water," said Petty Officer Christopher Connolly.

The training continues throughout the week.
