Joseph Valley pled guilty to negligent homicide and will be jailed for five months.
IRON MOUNTAIN -- The Wisconsin man involved in a fatal drunk driving crash in Dickinson County last February will be going to jail for five months.
Fifty-one-year-old Joseph Edward Valley of Depere, Wisconsin pled guilty to willful negligent homicide last month.
Valley lost control of his vehicle in Waucedah Township last February and collided head on with a vehicle driven by Michael Walter Meyers of Duluth, Minnesota.
Myers died from his injuries, and Tuesday, family members spoke at Valley's sentencing.
"Mike believed there are consequences for one's actions. Whether you meant to cause harm or not, he believed that we have to pay for our mistakes. You chose to drink and drive. You chose to drive recklessly with no regard to others on the road that day. You should have been killed. Not our brother," said the victim's sister, Peggy Harrington.
Along with five months in Dickinson County Jail, Valley will serve one year probation.
One of the conditions of his probation is that he perform six speaking engagements to enhance public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving.
