Michigan high court mulls courtroom cell phone rules

LANSING, MICHIGAN (AP) -- The Michigan Supreme Court is considering changes in statewide courthouse rules to address the use of cell phones and other electronic devices by lawyers and jurors.

One proposal posted last week would let attorneys send text messages or e-mails in courtrooms, but their phones would have to be silenced.

Another proposal would prohibit lawyers from using electronic devices in court altogether.

The high court also may require judges to instruct jurors not to use cell phones while attending trial.

The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports some attorneys hope justices allow cell phones to be kept silent during court proceedings because lawyers use the devices to maintain their schedules.

The court is accepting public comment on the proposals until May 1.
