Hoping to fill niche

MARQUETTE -- In these tough economic times, we hear a lot about layoffs and businesses closing, but a south Marquette business is trying to buck that trend.

Brandon Croney opened The Compound on Division Street in October on Marquette's southside.

Although he focuses on selling downhill skis, he also has used books for sale and offers landscaping services.  Croney says that so far he hasn't seen the effects of the economic downturn, in fact he says he's on track to pay off most of his bills and loans from opening the business.

”You know it may come.  Maybe my landscaping will slow down a little; maybe people won't be buying full ski packages.  But I do know that in this town, we are a winter recreation sports town and people are always going to make sure they're kids are having fun,” said The Compound’s owner, Brandon Croney.

Although he's the only one working there, Croney hopes to grow his business and hire employees.
