Latest news, weather, high school sports for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

U.S. News and World Report names top high schools in country.

UPPER PENINSULA -- Calumet High School won a silver medal and 13 other U.P. high schools were awarded bronze medals in the latest rankings announced by US News and World Report.

More than 21,000 public high schools were analyzed by academic and enrollment data.

One hundred schools nationwide were awarded gold medals, none from the U.P., and one from downstate, International Academy of Bloomfield Hills, which came in sixth overall nationally.

Nineteen Michigan high schools were given silver medals. The U.P.'s lone winner was Calumet High School.

Fifty-four Michigan schools were awarded bronze medals, and a remarkably high number, 13, came from the U.P.

They include:  Carney-Nadeau School, Cedarville High School, Chassell K-12 School, Dollar Bay High School, Engadine High School, Ewen-Trout Creek High School, Dollar Bay High School, Hancock Central High School, Houghton Central High School, Jeffers High School, Rudyard High School, Superior Central School, and Westwood High School.
