Schools budget now can go towards extracurricular activities instead of the gas tank.
IRON MOUNTAIN -- Down 37 percent in the past year, 33 percent in the past month, and 15 cents in the past 24 hours.
Gas prices are dropping nearly every day statewide, and Iron Mountain school officials say it's making all the difference in the school's budget.
Daily busing cost the school about $175,000 last year, but this year, officials hope to pay far less and use the savings for other areas that may be cut soon.
"That's the one positive with the declining enrollment in U.P. schools, including Iron Mountain; the economy, people moving out of state for jobs. It's not a good situation right now for school districts in the state of Michigan," said the Superintendent of Iron Mountain Schools, Denny Chartier.
The school spent $35,000 on busing students back and forth from extracurricular activities last year.
