MARQUETTE -- Experts predict one out of every three children born in the year 2000 will some day develop diabetes and it can often be prevented.

That's the message health care professionals hope to spread Friday during World Diabetes Day.

Children with Type 2 diabetes can often avoid the disease if parents help them develop a healthy, active lifestyle, since obesity is one of the leading causes.

"Is your child active on a regular basis?" asked U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network Director Ann Constance.  "What kinds of foods do you have in the house?  Is the family active together, because we know that being physically active can really help to ward off diabetes."

People that have children with diabetes can seek help and resources from the UPDON in order to manage the disease.

Constance encourages people to wear blue Friday in support of World Diabetes Day.
