An exit poll shows as many independents as Republicans voted in Michigan.
Following President-elect Barack Obama's sweeping victory on Nov. 4, Republicans have lost ground in more ways than one.
An exit poll showed fewer Michigan voters identifying with the GOP than at any time since Bill Clinton won re-election a dozen years ago. The survey, released on Nov. 8, shows 41 percent of the state's voters describe themselves as Democrats, 29 percent as Republicans, and 29 percent as independents or members of other parties.
Now as the transition to an Obama administration begins, the GOP is regrouping to decide what the future of the party will look like.
Political consultants say that's not surprising, given President Bush's unpopularity and Barack Obama's runaway victory margin.
Those consultants also say that many people's loyalities could shift if the Democrats don't perform well.
