Sky-high fuel prices keep more Michiganders on the ground.
SAWYER -- Fuel prices are limiting travel through the air as well as on the ground.
Air travel is way down all across the state of Michigan, and Sawyer International is no exception.
Compared to this point a year ago, Sawyer is looking at an 18 percent decrease in passengers, while air travel in the month of September was down 20 percent compared to last year.
"Due to the higher fuel costs, that has resulted in higher fares, which has resulted, unfortunately, in decreased ridership for airports throughout the state," said Airport Manager Keith Kaspari. "We're hopeful that 2009 will see a turnaround and get back up to levels that we've seen in the past."
Sawyer still expects good business this holiday season, so book your flight early if you plan on traveling later this year.
