Americans are drawing unemployment benefits at the highest level in 25 years.

The Labor Department says 122,000 more people are getting benefits, bringing that number to more than 3.8 million in late October.

The high level of claims reflects cost-cutting by companies.

Congressional Democrats are pushing for an extension of unemployment benefits in a new stimulus package.

Benefits typically last 26 weeks.
