Voter turnout broke records in many states, including Michigan.
UPPER PENINSULA -- Long lines at the polls broke voter turnout records in many states, including Michigan.
Sixty-six percent of registered voters in Michigan came out to vote, but that number wasn't as high as expected.
In the U.P., surprisingly, there was no real change in voter turnout from the 2004 election.
"Well, apparently the number of voters weren't as high as they were projected, but I think the interesting thing is certain demographics like young people, African Americans, voted in larger numbers than usual and maybe some other people didn't vote," added Bob Kulisheck, retired political science professor.
Analysts say many Republicans may not have voted due to McCain pulling his campaign out of Michigan and Obama's large lead in the polls going into the election.
