HOUGHTON -- The state fire marshal was called in to investigate a small elevator fire that caused the evacuation of the Best Western Franklin Square Inn in Houghton around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials say the fire appears to be suspicious.

When firefighters arrived, the small fire had already been put out by an employee using a fire extinguisher.

Approximately 70 people, including several Michigan Tech students who live on the sixth floor, were evacuated.
