MENOMINEE COUNTY -- From the new President to U.S. Senators to State House seats, Democrats were the big winners at the polls.

Polls were busy Tuesday, setting records across the nation, and voters made their voices loud and clear.

Democrat Judy Nerat won the vacant 108th District seat in the State House with a victory over Republican Mike Falcon by nearly 5,500 votes.

"It's like a dream," said Nerat.  "I'm still kind of numb to it, but I'm still really excited because I know I will do a good job for the 108th."

Democratic incumbents from the 109th and 110th Districts also claimed victory.

Officials say this will be one of the Democrats' biggest majorities in the House in the past three decades.  Results show the Democrats will increase their current 58 to 52 advantage in Michigan's State House to roughly 67 to 43 seats over the Republicans.

Nerat says voters wanted a change.

"The message was there, people do want a change and it will definitely benefit our state, especially for the U.P. and our district," Nerat said.

But not everyone saw it coming.  Republican Tom Casperson, who was trounced by incumbent Bart Stupak for the 1st Congressional seat, says he didn't expect to see such lopsided results.

"You know with state levels and my level, I really expected the numbers to be closer than they were," explained Casperson.  "I know in my specific race, we had an uphill battle taking out an incumbent was very difficult, but I was very surprised with how far it went, especially in Michigan."

Nerat says she's the first women to be elected State Representative for the 108th District.
