Road and sidewalk proposal is defeated.
OSCEOLA TOWNSHIP -- Osceola Township officials are discouraged by the defeat Tuesday of a road and sidewalk proposal. It called for a .3 mill increase over the next five years and would have raised about $80,000. But the voters turned it down.
Officials say that by the end of 2009, the township's road fund will be empty.
"When the money runs out, the money runs out," explains Township Supervisor Steve Karpiak. "And I would instruct people in the community if they have problems with roads, sidewalks, drainage off the roads, they should call the Houghton County Road Commission, because the township won't have any money to help them."
The millage proposal was soundly defeated in all three precincts.
