Authorities believe the Keweenaw blaze may have been started by a campfire.
MOHAWK -- A 31 acre wildfire just north of Mohawk might have been caused by a campfire, according to investigators.
The blaze, which started Thursday night, was extinguished Friday. Fire officers with the Department of Natural Resources spent the day mopping up, after Allouez and Ahmeek Volunteer Fire Departments got the fire under control.
"It will take most of the day to mop up," explained John Mattila, a fire officer with the DNR. "There are a lot of stumps burning. We'll be back tomorrow (Saturday) and the next day to monitor it, but we should get most of it by the end of the day."
Authorities say remnants of a campfire were found near the suspected origin of the fire.
Crews were called out at 5:30 a.m. Friday after loggers discovered the blaze.
On Friday, fires were also reported in the Big Bay area of Powell Township, in Chocolay Township, and in Cedarville Township in Menominee County.
