The 2013 Softball in the Dome tournament raised more than $5000 for Special Olympics Area 36

MARQUETTE -- The annual Softball in the Dome tournament wrapped up Sunday.

The four-day men's slow pitch tournament is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics Area 36. This year the tournament raised over $5000. This year's winners are the Wilderness Whitetails from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. They went home with a trophy and $1000. Many Special Olympics athletes and members of the community came to watch the games.

"The Special Olympics athletes come and spend these days with us. They're treated with respect and dignity, and they're included in the family of softball. The players treat them wonderfully; they sign autographs, and that's very inspirational, and it's very important to our athletes," said Merrilee Keller, Tournament Co-Chair.

The Softball in the Dome tournament is organized entirely by community volunteers. The next tournament will be held February 6-9, 2014.
