HOUGHTON COUNTY -- Winter seems to have finally arrived in the Copper Country.

Houghton and Keweenaw counties are currently under a lake effect snow warning. The two counties were previously under a lake effect snow advisory over the weekend.

Reports of up to 20 inches of snow were recorded in some areas of Houghton County. Throughout the day on Monday, patches of sunlight came through with fairly consistent snowfall.

Plow trucks littered the streets and parking lots, some creating snow banks over six feet high. The Houghton County Road Commission sent out sand trucks to dust the roads, particularly incline streets and curves.

The commission started their day at three in the morning and was out for eight to ten hours.

"Today we had everybody out, all the wingmen in, ten graders, twelve Oshkosh's, and nine sanders," said Maintenance Superintendant Ray Saatio. "Just another day in the Copper Country."

Houghton and Keweenaw counties will remain under a lake effect snow warning until 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service is predicting more snow overnight.
