MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Layoffs are coming to the Marquette iron range.

A Cliffs Natural Resources official says most of the layoffs are coming at the end of March, when production is stopped at the Empire Mine. Almost 350 plant and pit employees will get pink slips. This was announced last November by Cliffs.

After five weeks, about 120 union employees will be called back for maintenance work at the Empire and Tilden Mines. Around 30 people will be laid off this coming Monday. However, 18 of them will be called back and assigned to contract work.

The 12 remaining will be on indefinite layoff. The layoffs are the result of a reduced demand for iron ore pellets.
