Help by mentoring year-round

ESCANABA -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area recently held their annual Jig It fundraiser, but they also want the public to know about other ways to help throughout the year.

There is a year-round need for mentoring in programs within schools. There are a lot of corporate mentoring opportunities as well, where Big Brothers Big Sisters take volunteers, business people, and retired people, and they're matched one-on-one with youth in schools.

"We're finding that one-on-one with the youth in the school system has been just rewarding as our community-based program," said BBBS Executive Director Tanya Schuster. "And these are kids who administration and social workers have referred to them, or parents have requested for this service."

Officials say sometimes these kids are in situations where they need a little help from others to get over those barriers.
