ISHPEMING -- The Upper Peninsula's first-ever Color Run was a success earlier this month, and now the community will benefit.

On Thursday morning checks were handed out to five local non-profit organizations that volunteered at color stations for the race that took place at the Country Village in Ishpeming.

Checks for $500 were presented to the YMCA of Marquette County, Love Inc, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, and Strength From Within, which is a free wellness and fitness program through Bell Hospital that works with sixth through eighth graders in western Marquette County.

"The Ishpeming-Negaunee Chamber did a great job organizing something that was active, fun, and gets people out of the house in the middle of winter," said Katie Brady of Bell Hospital. "We were just really glad to be a part of it. The Strength From Within program likes to do things that are active."

Twenty kids from the program either volunteered or participated.
