IRON MOUNTAIN -- Vitamin D is neglected by many, but day by day, developing medical research and medical experts are discovering the powerful benefits that come with a daily dose of this supplement.

According to research from a recent study (
http://www.grassrootshealth.net/press-20090525) done by Dr. Cedric F. Garland, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and Moores Cancer Center of the University of California, “Vitamin D prevents cancer of the colon” and “it prevents breast cancer.”

In addition, Vitamin D has been linked to help a multitude of other health issues such as preventing depression and improving bone health, cognitive enhancement and one's immune system.

“It works for about every system that we have,” explains Dr. Garland. “It makes cells stick together, and cells need to stick together to function normally.”

A study (
http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/87/4/1080S.abstract) published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) says that the average adult should be taking 4000 IU, or international units, of Vitamin D3 a day.

Dr. Garland says this is a supplement you don't want to skip, explaining that often foods and even sun exposure don't provide our bodies with the adequate amounts of Vitamin D that we need.

“There’s just no getting around the need for supplements,” Garland insists.  “When we're out in the sun, we're wearing sunscreen or we're wearing clothing, exposing only our face and hands…that’s only eight percent of the body’s surface area.”
