HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP -- Ten dollars! That's how much money Humboldt Township handed over to the United States Navy on Friday, paying for the purchase of their former communications facility.
The Extremely Low Frequency, or ELF, site opened in the 1980s and was used by the Navy to communicate with submarines around the world. The Navy vacated the buildings back in 2005, and after a seven year process, it was handed over to Humboldt Township at a ceremony Friday morning.
U.S. Senator Carl Levin was on hand. He toured the facility and emphasized the importance of reusing facilities like the ELF site, which was a critical part of Cold War operations.
"Not just property here and buildings, but the equipment inside of these buildings is extremely valuable," said Levin. "It's just great that Humboldt Township has not just said, 'Hey, wait a minute, we want to use what's here now,' but, 'We have a future use for the equipment that's inside these facilities.'"
The facility still has showers, electricity, and a host of technological equipment.
The township is still deciding how to best use the site. Options include a community center or disaster relief site.
