MARQUETTE -- This year marks the 20th anniversary for nutritional facts labels which provide the nutritional content for most food.

The Food and Drug Administration mandated the nutrition facts label in 1993 after the passage of the Nutrition Label and Education Act in 1990. The act gave the FDA the authority to require specific nutritional information to be declared on most food sold in the United States.

"I think it's important for us to make informed choices about what we're putting into our bodies," said MGH Dietician Sherri Rule. "With all of the studies and research that's out there now about inflammation within the body and that inflammation being linked to what we put into our bodies regarding food, the nutrition facts panel gives us a lot of information about that."

The FDA is planning to update the nutrition facts label based on the latest nutrition recommendations.
