MARQUETTE -- The Dead River Derby is working to set up a Jr. Roller Derby league in Marquette. They'll be holding an informational meeting Thursday at the Graveraet school building. The league would be made up of female skaters ages 7 to 17. Similar leagues are already established in Kingsford and Escanaba. The junior derby would also have less contact than roller derby for adults. It would focus more on the technical aspects of the sport.

"It's a really unique experience; it's really different than anything I've ever done--the camaraderie, the team spirit, the support--it's absolutely amazing," said Sarah Kurian of the Dead River Derby. "I think it's a excellent opportunity for young girls to get involved in."

The meeting goes from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. They'll have information on forming the league, insurance and training. No skating experience is required.
