MARQUETTE COUNTY -- This stretch of mild weather has brought out the pothole patrol as the Marquette County Road Commission heads out to fill holes twice a day.
A day like Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to fill potholes because the ground is free of snow. Potholes are caused when water gets in the soil below the road. When temperatures drop, the water freezes and causes the ground to expand.
When cars drive over that particular part of the road it causes the roads to crack, leaving potholes.
"The most noticeable ones are the US-41 route right now because that's the highest traveled and most people recognize them there and the speed," said Operations and Maintenance Director Michael Harrington. "We also get plenty of potholes on the low speed, low volume roads. They're just covered by snow right now."
The road commission says during this time of year it's hard to keep the potholes filled because the roads thaw during the day and freeze at night.
