MARQUETTE -- The United States Olympic Education Center held their 4th annual weightlifting Thunderdome Challenge Monday at Northern Michigan University. The athletes were trying to qualify for the National University Championships in April.

More than 20 student athletes lifted in the event. USOEC coach Vance Newgard says this is a great way to showcase the talent of the athletes.

"They're all making progress. They're all medaling, setting personal records. That's going to continue," said Newgard. "We're hoping to have good results at University Nationals. We're hoping to win the school award for that, and I'm very proud of our program here at the Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan."

All of the lifters did qualify for the University Championships Monday. That event will be April 4-7 in Tennessee.
