TRENARY -- The Village of Trenary is usually synonymous with their sweet, crunchy bread, but when the last weekend in February rolls around...outhouse races become the toast of the town.

For the past 20 years, teams from around the world have built, decorated, and pushed their very own johns down Main Street. The outhouses don't have to be fully functional, but they are required to have a built-in toilet seat and racing number.

Organizers say that age isn't a factor either. Kids and adults are eligible to compete for cash prizes, but most racers are just there for the fun of it.

"I heard it's pretty crazy and people get into it," said Thomas Andre of Richmond, Mi. "It's exciting. I'm looking forward to it. I'm worried about tipping it over and making it fall a part. It's not the sturdiest thing ever, but we're going to start practicing tonight once it's all built and hope for the best."

The fastest time isn't the only award handed out. Competitors are judged on their craftsmanship, outfits, and overall exuberance.

Main Street in Trenary will be fully occupied with racers as early as 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the first port-o-potty set to launch at 2 p.m., later in the afternoon.
