HOUGHTON -- For most of Tuesday through early Wednesday morning, parts of the Keweenaw were under a blizzard warning.

Plow trucks were on the streets in full force making sure the roads were clear for motorists.

The Houghton County Road Commission was out at the normal time of 3 a.m. with graters, plows, and sanders.

Typically the trucks are done by one or two in the afternoon, but yesterday they were all out past 4 p.m.

The motoring public at times made it difficult for the trucks to get through the streets, as many people were getting stuck in the snow.

The road commission says clearing the roads is a tough job in more ways than one.

“There's a lot of snow to move out of the way, there's been extensive drifting on all of our roads,” explained county highway engineer, Kevin Harju. “We had a lot of equipment failures, which is typical, I guess, for a large storm like this. It's hard on equipment. All in all, the fatigue on the guys from driving over-time shifts.”

Though the job has its challenges, Harju says it is always business as usual.
