ESCANABA -- It's a unique partnership among several U.P.-based engineering, manufacturing, and technology companies. It’s called the Delta Green Integrator, and it's a new marine and aerospace cluster. The companies came together Tuesday at the Delta County Airport for a press conference for the launch of the cluster. The cluster is an economic development project that will focus on light weighting parts and systems of ships and planes.

The idea is to first address the marine cluster by working with area shipyards to reduce weight of ships. Reducing the weight of aircraft and thus saving on fuel, will be phase two.

Officials from the companies involved expressed their joy at this mission to go green.

“We're really excited to be involved in this and hopefully be able to bring some more jobs and more work to Upper Michigan,” says Robert Grandahl, the Operations and Project Manager of Acuren. “We definitely look forward to putting as many people to work as we possibly can."

Officials add that they're hoping to involve other U.S. companies.

“If they offer a skill set that's different or complimentary to what our group already has,” says Christian Perreault, the Senior Partner of Explorer Solutions, “we will definitely be open to looking at what they have to offer and bridging them into the cluster."

In the next two weeks, the members will meet with major ship builders to present the skill set of the group. At the presentation Tuesday, it was announced that the long-term vision is to get Delta County recognized as a marine center of expertise.

Current members of the Cluster are: The Oldenburg Group International (Kingsford); Basic Marine (Escanaba); Creative Composites (Rapid River); GS Engineering and Great Lakes Sound & Vibration (GLSV), (Houghton); Blanchard and Associates (McMillan); and Acuren (Iron Mountain).
