ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP -- The bitter temperatures have been causing a number of closures and cancellations throughout Upper Michigan, but how do schools choose to call off classes?

NICE Community Schools were closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Superintendent Bryan DeAugustine confers with the National Weather Service, his schools' transportation director, and area superintendents on whether or not to cancel classes.

The decision is ultimately up to the superintendent. For the past two days, his concern has been young children waiting for the buses in the extreme cold.

"We always err on the side of caution, and we figure that safety is the most important thing," said DeAugustine. "We try and do what's best and safest for the students."

As of right now, Westwood High School and Aspen Ridge Elementary schools are planning to be open on Thursday. For the most up-to-date list of school closures in the Upper Peninsula, check out our school closings page.
