IRON MOUNTAIN -- The VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain is encouraging veterans to get their flu shot.

People over the age of 60 or those with chronic illnesses such as asthma, are more at risk in catching the virus.

The flu vaccine is the surest way to protect yourself against the virus this season.

The VA is also asking vets to call if they've already received the vaccine for documentation purposes.

"For our veterans, we've noticed that we have a little less than half that have participated in the immunizations for flu clinics this year. We're really putting on a big push in encouraging the veterans to get vaccinated," said Darlene Johnson, disease prevention manager.

Appointments for the flu vaccine are not necessary, and walk-ins are welcome.
