MARQUETTE -- The Gwinn man accused of killing a woman in a hit-and-run crash on the Fourth of July has pled guilty to both counts.

Thirty-year-old Luke Huotari faced two felony counts of failing to stop at an accident causing serious injury or death.

According to police, Huotari hit and killed Karin LaChapelle of Marquette following the Fourth of July fireworks in Marquette. LaChapelle's husband was also seriously injured in the crash, but he recovered from his injuries.

"The Michigan State Police determined that Mr. Huotari was not at fault for this accident, it was just that, an accident, and he's felt horrible ever since this has happened and very remorseful, and his prayers and wishes go out to the victims," said defense attorney Karl Numminen.

The felony charges Huotari has pled guilty to are both five year felonies. A sentencing date has been set for February 15.
