IRON MOUNTAIN -- Preparing for winter--it's one thing we know how to do very well here in the U.P.

But with colder temperatures expected in the coming days, it's important to know how to keep your pets safe from the outside elements.

The manager from Almost Home Animal Shelter in Iron Mountain explains ways to help your pet this winter.

"Number one for cats--cats don't need to be outdoors, period. You have to constantly provide fresh water because it freezes," said Shelter Manager, Diane Luczak.

Colder weather can also be painful for pets suffering from arthritis, so make sure they have adequate warmth.

Keeping pets active is one way to help them stay healthy during the winter.  But making sure they are loved and warm is one of the best things a pet owner can do.
