ISHPEMING -- The first-annual Arctic Blast Color Dash brightened up the Ishpeming Hills in the Country Village on Saturday morning. Nearly 300 runners strapped on snowshoes and ran through the five-kilometer course.

Their t-shirts started out white, but throughout the race, corn starch-based colored powders were doused on runners. It was the first-ever color run in the Upper Peninsula.

The event was organized by the Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce. They added a twist to the fun by including snowshoes.

"It was fun, the people on the course, the spectators, the volunteers, the competition, it was a great time," said Matthew Brownell, who crossed the finish-line first after about 30 minutes. "We're here with family and friends, so it's fun."

A one-kilometer kids race was also held before the five-kilometer race. A portion of the race entry fees will go to local charities.
