HOUGHTON COUNTY -- A group of women from Houghton County made their way around to Copper Country schools Friday morning, providing meals to children in need.

The program, called "31 Backpacks," was created to collect food donations to make sack lunches for less fortunate students.

Laurel and Melissa Maki co-founded 31 Backpacks after hearing about it across the nation.  The mother/daughter duo has since gained more volunteers to help pass out lunches.

The Makis visited CLK, Lake Linden, and the Dollar Bay schools Friday.   They say filling this need is not just satisfying for the belly.

"We don't actually see the kids--their principals deliver to them--but we've been told that they love coming to school on Monday. They're in a good mood on Friday rather than depressed because they know they were going hungry," said Melissa Maki.

31 Backpacks gives meals to students who are suggested by school principals and social workers.
