HUMBOLDT TWP. -- UPDATE: The Marquette County Sheriff's Department has been contacted by the party that left the scene of a car/moose accident on M-95 in Humboldt Township.

A crash involving two vehicles and a cow moose on Wednesday evening in Marquette County is under investigation. Two vehicles struck the moose on M-95 about five miles south of US-41.

Both crashes occurred at 6:15 p.m. in Humboldt Township. The first vehicle fled the scene and the driver of the second vehicle was injured.

The first vehicle was traveling north and struck a moose in the northbound lane. The driver is described as in his late 50s to early 60s with short, clean cut grey hair approximately 5'8" in height. He was traveling with a female passenger.

The vehicle fled the scene shortly after the crash, and alcohol is believed to be involved. Witnesses described the vehicle as a newer, dark SUV, similar to a Ford Escape. There was damage to the passenger side front end.

The second vehicle was traveling north behind the first vehicle and also struck the moose as it was still standing in the roadway. The driver, a 63-year-old Munising woman, complained of head, neck, and back pain from the crash. She was wearing her seatbelt and the airbags did not deploy. She was transported by ambulance to Bell Hospital for evaluation.

The female moose was killed as a result of the crashes and was brought to the Ishpeming DNR office.

Anyone having additional information on the first vehicle involved in the crash is asked to contact the Marquette County Sheriff's Office at (906) 225-8435.
