HOUGHTON COUNTY -- The Houghton County Sheriff's Department is warning people about a phone scam targeting the elderly.

The caller states you can win a multi-million dollar prize if you send the caller a check to cover the taxes.  The scammers also tell you to go to Walmart and purchase a money gram card and forward them the pin number to claim your prize.

Police say anytime you're asked to send money to claim a prize, it's a sure sign of scam
