MARQUETTE -- Skaters at Lakeview Arena got a jump on New Year's Eve with their annual Disco Ball Drop on Monday afternoon.

People were encouraged to dress up in 70s style costumes and skate to a collection of disco hits. This was the fourth year for the open skate event, and more than 100 people attended.

Organizers say not only is this a way to celebrate New Year's Eve, it also creates interest in disco music.

"It's just something fun to do on New Year's Eve when maybe some of the seniors or the younger kids can't get out to the late night events," said organizer Cindy Noble. "Disco definitely is not dead, a lot of kids actually go home, at least my kids went home and they wanted to download a bunch of 70s songs so it kind of revives the 70s a bit."

The money raised for the Disco Ball Drop goes back into planning the event for next year.
