ESCANABA -- It's Christmas Eve, and though most stores are closed for the holiday, it's not too early to start thinking about the New Year's Eve.

For many party-goers, the perfect party gift is a bottle of wine for their host or hostess.

Leigh Schmidt, owner and winemaker of Leigh's Garden Winery in Escanaba, says semi-sweet wines appeal to most people. Light wines at the winery are one to three years old, while the darker ones are between two and five years old.

There are even wine gift crates to really impress the host.

"It starts the appetite and it also leaves you feeling good so that you will be in a better mood to have a good conversation with people," said Schmidt.

Wine experts say a bottle of wine is a nice way to say hello and share the tradition of good food and drink with others.
