ISHPEMING -- The Ishpeming Hematites are volunteering as Salvation Army bell ringers.

Two weeks ago the entire football team traveled to New York City. It was all because thousands of people voted online for Eric Dompierre in the 2012 Sports Illustrated Underdogs Contest.

His story won and now the team is thanking the community for all of their support.

"We're here to give back to the community because they've done so much for us over the entire football season. We just have our team volunteering to help ring the bell and try to raise money for people," said Tyler Windahl, football player.

The Hematites spent two hours in front of Shopko in Ishpeming, ringing bells as shoppers dropped money into the red bucket.

Don't forget:  you can catch our special on the Hematites' amazing journey on New Year's Eve.
