The school donated 110 new books last year, but they have already doubled that amount this year

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP -- Students at Aspen Ridge School in Ishpeming Township are giving other kids the gift of reading this holiday season. Throughout the month, every classroom has been collecting new books that will be donated to the Salvation Army in Ishpeming.

The project is sponsored by the Marquette-Alger Reading Council. Since the program began back in 1988, over 20,000 new books have been given to local children who otherwise might not receive a book for Christmas.

First grader Athena Kinnunen said, "We donate books because if no one has any money, they can just get in the box to get some."

Bradley Luce, also a first grader, added, "It's a good thing to get something for Christmas. It's good to read."

The school donated 110 new books last year. They have already doubled that amount this year.
