ISHPEMING -- The fairy tale story of the state champion Ishpeming Hematite football team continued on Monday as the team left for New York City.

The entire team is going to the Big Apple to celebrate the story of their teammate, Eric Dompierre, at Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year Award ceremony.

Dompierre and his dad, Dean, changed the Michigan High School Athletic Association's rule barring anyone over 18 from playing sports.

“It means a whole lot to the whole community, everyone who supported us, like everything--donating money, Powerade, Subway--Everything,” said football player, Seppi Bertucci.

We will have full coverage of the Hematites' trip to New York City as Gabriella DeLuca from our sister station, FOX UP, is traveling with the team.
