ISHPEMING -- Drivers in Ishpeming likely noticed some commotion along Division Street these past couple of days.

The city began demolition on a two story, dilapidated structure Monday.  The long-vacant building had two addresses, one on Division and one on South First Street.  Part of South First Street remained closed Tuesday for the cleanup, which is expected to last through the end of the week.

"It switched between owners that have purchased it off of tax foreclosure sales and failed to make improvements to the building.  So it deteriorated to a condition where it was literally almost falling down, it was inhabitable," said Ishpeming City Manager, Jared Ottenwess.

The two owners of the property will be expected to pay the city for the cost of demolition, roughly $44,000.

Ottenwess says Ishpeming has budgeted over a $100,000 over the past two fiscal years for demolition projects.
