ONTONAGON -- The Ontonagon community is celebrating a recently completed animal shelter.

Construction on the Ontonagon County Animal Protection, or OCAP, facility began over three years ago.  OCAP features several new dog kennels, a fenced in run area for the pooches, and a new social room for the cats.

Construction was done by the OCAP volunteers.  They say they're grateful to the community who voted for a millage increase to help fund it's operating expenses for the next four years.

"We have animals who come in as strays.  We have animals who were giving up by their families because they couldn't afford to keep them anymore.  And we even have some animals because there are health problems in the family.  That's what we're here for," said OCAP Vice President, Janet Wolfe.

The shelter also provides veterinary services and is a no kill shelter.
