MARQUETTE -- Boy Scouts earned some new merit badges Saturday at Northern Michigan University's Jacobetti Center.

It was the annual scouting college day.

Boy Scouts had their choice of 14 different sessions to earn a new merit badge, many of which were in science and technology like robotics, electronics, or welding.

Welding is a brand new merit badge for Boy Scouts this year.

Scouting college day has grown immensely since it was started in 2006.

"One of the things that drives me to do this is I want to have as many youth as possible see what is out there as far as hobbies, vocations, something they might not have run across, they'll run across here, and it might peak their interest," said Mark Matteson, event coordinator.

Around 100 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and adult leaders participated this year.
