MARQUETTE -- According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in Michigan has been in a steady decline since 2009, but has recently increased to 9.3 percent in September.

Despite rising unemployment, some career fields are still thriving in the Upper Peninsula. Michigan Works reports that nursing, electrical maintenance, and manufacturing are doing especially well in the central six counties.

Officials anticipate an additional 800 jobs to be available in manufacturing in the next three to five years.

"There are certainly folks that wish they are working that are not, but I'm still enthused by what we're seeing as far as numbers and the increase in job availability," said Tony Retaskie of MI Works Job Force.

"There are many nice paying jobs in my area! Problem is people are not taking them," said Facebook fan Ericka Williams.

Michigan Works in Marquette is a free resource to help employers find qualified applicants and to help job seekers find employment. The website www.MiTalent.org is also a valuable resource for similar services finding a job in Michigan.
