MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Rio Tinto Eagle Mine is giving Upper Peninsula residents the chance to voice their opinions.

This year, mine officials introduced their community scorecard, which is a way for community members to provide feedback on the progress of the mine, which is scheduled to start production in 2014. Residents answer a questionnaire regarding the mine's safety, local hiring, and environmental performance.

"The community has asked for a way to provide feedback for operations, and the scorecard gives them a voice to talk about the things that are important to them, such as environment, safety, local hire, etc., so this is really a response to the community, and we're providing the feedback that they've asked for," said Dan Blondeau of the Rio Tinto Eagle Mine.

The first meeting will be held on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Country Village Banquet and Conference Center in Ishpeming. The next meeting will be on Thursday at the Northern Michigan University Peter White Lounge at 7:30 a.m.
