HOUGHTON -- The first fall Board of Control meeting of the new school year at Michigan Technological University took place on Thursday.

During the meeting, board members got a chance to see a brand new crowd funding website called Superior Ideas. The site allows people to give money to a research project of their choice.

"What it is is an opportunity for us to reach out to the public and for the public to get directly involved with supporting research at the university and to engage with individual researchers and projects," said VP of Research at MTU, David Reed.

During the meeting, a presentation was given on the 2014 five-year capital outlay plan. Michigan Tech says the plan includes a human health research center and advanced energy research labs. The board also talked about how well the career fair went with 288 companies in attendance and over 4,000 interviews conducted.

This week, Michigan Tech is celebrating homecoming with their parade starting Friday afternoon.
