MARQUETTE -- A local filmmaker is showing her production during Northern Michigan University's UNITED Conference. Heather Courtney is a filmmaker from the Houghton area. Her film, Where Soldiers Come From, is a look at the lives of a group of friends as they get sent to disarm roadside bombs in war torn Afghanistan. She hopes those who see her film take away a new look at student soldiers.

"Just to bring more awareness and an open-mindedness to the students who are here, who are not veterans, to maybe think twice about what these guys might have gone through and what they've seen," said Courtney.

This is NMU's seventh UNITED conference. The conference is designed to celebrate diversity and community, both locally and from across the world. More information on the UNITED conference and its events is available by clicking here.
